Abstract

Aortitis: Clinical, pathologic and radiographic aspects A. Lande, Y. M. Berkman, and H. A. McAllister, Jr. New York, 1986, Raven Press, 287 pages, $57.50. Vascular surgeons who deal with atherosclerotic arterial problems must possess sound knowledge of the various forms of aortitis and arteritis. This monograph by two radiologists (Drs. Lande and Berkman) and one pathologist (Dr. McAllister) provides complete coverage on aortitis of various origins. Both pathologic and radiologic aspects of the disease are thoroughly discussed and, in particular, nicely illustrated by representative radiographs. Newer diagnostic modalities, such as the CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging, are included to give up-to-date information on radiologic investigation of aortitis. Eleven contributors, each an expert in his own field, give a thorough discussion on rheumatoid, giant cell, infectious, and Takayasu's aortitis and on the ocular, neurologic, and pediatric manifestations of this disease. The last chapter, “Surgical Considerations in Aortitis,” by Duncan and Cooley of the Texas Heart Institute, reassures me that there is, indeed, a place for the vascular surgeon in the treatment of aortitis. The illustrations are of good quality, and I found the extensive list of references to be of particular value. Serious students of vascular disease will find this monograph helpful to sharpen their knowledge and, more important, to fill the clinical vacuum on the disease. I agree with Dr. Lande, it is a volume that no clinician can afford to miss.
