Abstract
Computed tomography angiogram of the chest in a 58-year-old woman on femoro-femoral venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) with contrast medium injected through the chest port showed a well-demarcated filling defect with a crescent-shaped proximal edge within the ascending aorta, closely mimicking an aortic dissection (Fig 1a, b). This artifact resulted from an admixture of competing circulatory streams seen in peripheral venoarterial ECMO. The dominant ECMO circuit siphoned the contrast-enhanced venous blood and recirculated it back into the arterial circulation, which filled most of the aorta retrogradely.
