Abstract

The practice of literate programming is not widespread because existing literate programming systems have some undesirable characteristics such as programming language and test processor dependence and lack of flexible tools for viewing and manipulation of the source file. This paper uses Wirth''s solution to the 8-Queens problem from the original article to demonstrate the capabilities of the programming language and text processor independent literate programming system AOPS (Abstraction Oriented Programming System). It discusses how AOPS addresses those undesirable characteristics in an effort to make literate programming available to everyone. It also discusses several unique features of AOPS and their applications which extend the capabilities of AOPS beyond those of existing literate programming systems.
