Abstract
A new nileid trilobite genus from the lower Ordovician of the Montagne Noire (France), closely related to the worldwide distributed genus Nileus Dalman, 1827, is erected and described under the name Aocaspis nov. gen. A brief discussion on the classification of nileid trilobites is given and leads to assume that two “groups” are present within the family. On the basis of trilobite associations two assemblage zones are defined within the Schistes de Saint-Chinian Formation.
