Abstract

Scientific principles are being applied increasingly to the study of sport. Physiologists now have a clearer understanding of the physical fitness requirements of sports events. Conjecture might lead to the suggestion that the continued use of optimal arousal theory may be due to the unavailability of a sufficiently viable alternative approach. Optimal arousal theory proposes a close relationship between a subject’s level of activation or arousal and level of performance. Criticism of the optimal arousal approach is directed at several different facets of the theory. A fundamental building block of reversal theory which helps in the understanding of how arousal is interpreted is the notion of metamotivational states. Motives for engaging in this type of activity will vary with the individual and the experience attached to this motivation will be exhibited in different ways. In reversal theory, reversals from one metamotivational state to another are thought to be triggered by three classes of inducing agents.
