Abstract

Patients with first-time-diagnosed hyperthyroidism caused by Graves’ disease are primarily treated with antithyroid drug (ATD) therapy in many clinics around the world, especially in Europe, South America, and Asia, but more commonly now also in the USA. The review discusses indications and contraindications for therapy as well as mechanisms of action of ATD. Practical guidance is given on initiation of ATD therapy, adjustment of drug dose, and on the withdrawal of therapy. Side effects to the drugs are reviewed in detail and principles of ATD pretreatment before and after radioiodine as well the possibility of continuous low-dose ATD therapy are discussed.
