Abstract

Abstract Anti-ship missiles are the primary weapon of modern strike/surface naval warfare. That is, they are the weapon of choice by which an attack is carried out against a ship on the surface of the sea. An anti-ship missile attack may be launched from the shore, from aircraft (including helicopters), from submarines or from other surface ships. In 1991 it was reported that seventy-one countries possessed anti-ship missiles. This number will have since increased, particularly as Russia seeks to earn foreign hard currency through the sale of sophisticated anti-ship missiles. Seventeen countries produce anti-ship missiles. While the number of types of anti-ship missiles is difficult to determine, there are certainly over fifty.
