Abstract

AIM: Antipyretic effect of the alcoholic extract of Fagonia schweinfurthii Hadidi(Family- Zygophyllaceae). Against brewer yeast induced pyrexia model in albino rats of both sexes was investigated. METHODS: Pyrexia was induced by subcutaneously injecting 20% w/v Brewer\'s yeast suspension (20 ml/kg) in the back below the nape of the neck of animals. Twenty four hours after the injection, the rectal temperature of each rat was measured. The temperature was measured at 0, 60, 90 and 120 min. after drug administration. Paracetamol (150 mg/kg p. o.) was used as standard drug. The group received alcoholic extract 400mg/kg showed significant decrease in rectal temperature from 39.73± 0.13 to 39.40± 0.05 as compared with the group received standard drug. All the values are expressed as mean ± standard deviation and analyzed for ANOVA and Dunnet’s t-test. Differences between groups were considered significant at P < 0.01 levels. RESULT: The statistically processed results support the conclusion, that the alcoholic extract of Fagonia schweinfurthii (400mg/kg) possesses dose dependent, significant antipyretic activity. CONCLUSIONS: From the study it was concluded that plant of Fagonia schweinfurthii possess significant antipyretic activity.
