Abstract

Hereditary stomatocytosis is an inherited haemolytic anaemia which is characterized by the presence on the blood film of red cells showing a well-demarcated linear unstained area across their center, instead of the normal circular area of pallor. Dehydrated hereditary stomatocytosis (DHS) is the most commonly encountered form (For review, see [1]). DHS has a dominant mode of inheritance. In some cases, the responsible gene has been mapped to 16 q24-qter [2,3]. DHS is a mild haemolytic anaemia, in which haemolysis is often compensated, but is strongly iron-loading.
