Abstract

These investigators tested whether treatment with an antiparasitic (albendazole) and a corticosteroid (dexamethasone) would reduce seizures associated with neurocysticercosis. They randomized 120 adults with viable intraparenchymal cysts and a recent history of at least one seizure, to receive 10 days of either 800 mg daily albendazole plus 6 mg daily dexamethasone (ALB/DEX) or matching placebos. Participants with cysts surrounded by edema and inflammation were included if MRI documented a liquid center (considered a sign of viability). All patients were cysticercosis-seropositive.
