Abstract

In the reaction of 2,4-dimethyl-2,4-heptanedihydroperoxide with 2,6-ditert-butyl-4-methyl-phenol in the presence of Co(II)/Co(III) ions, under conditions modelling the interaction of oxidized polypropylene with antioxidant, two alkylperoxycyclohexadienones are formed. At a lower relative concentration of the ROO′ radicals, there is also oxidative coupling and formation of bisphenol and stilbenequinone. A change in the composition of the reaction product due to a change in the relative proportions of reactants has also been demonstrated in a reaction carried out with tert-butyl-peroxyl. Alkylperoxycyclohexadienones thus obtained initiate the oxidation of tetralin.
