Abstract

Varthemia persica DC (Asteraceae) is an aromatic plant that grows wild in central parts of Iran. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of V. persica extracts in vitro, also, the relation between the total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid contents (TFC) of each extract and its antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. The amount of TPC and TFC was higher in V. persica ethanol extract, followed by methanol and aqueous extracts, respectively. The lower IC50 was for V. persica ethanol extract (82 μg/ml), followed by methanol extract (145 μg/ml) and aqueous extract (550 μg/ml) and these amounts were higher than BHT (Butylated hydroxytoluene) (20 μg/ml). The result of antimicrobial screening exhibited that the antimicrobial activity of V. persica ethanol extract was higher than that of methanol extract followed by its aqueous extract. Therefore, there is a positive relation between TPC and TFC of V. persica extracts and their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Other studies are required for its application in different industries especially as antioxidant agent.
