Abstract

The antimicrobial activity of essential oils from Vetiveria zizanioides and Vetiveria nigritana roots was tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and compared to the activity of clove oil. The results showed a low activity against Gram-negative bacilli; but a higher efficiency was observed against Gram-positive cocci, with MIC values amounting to that of clove oil. The antifungal activity of oils was also tested on Candida albicans; the MIC values were approximately identical for the two oils, and quite similar to those of clove oil.
