Abstract

The antibacterial activity of aqueous extracts from different tissues of Isostichopus badionotus was evaluated in this study. The antibacterial activity was detected in aqueous extracts of muscle and respiratory tract. A high antibacterial activity was found in the Membrane Protein fraction (MP) muscle on Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio cholerae, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of MP against S. aureus was 37.4 and 8.4 μg/ml protein for V. cholerae. It also showed resistance to treatment with proteinase K and heat, indicating that the active compound of this fraction is from non-protein origin. The results of this study suggest that I. badionotus is a potential source for discovering new antibiotics.
