Abstract

The aim of this article is to characterize the new endeavours in the field of the history of ancient art by reviewing the books listed on p. 1. Following Cur‐tius the reviewer wishes to emphasize, on the one hand, the seemingly continuous evolution in the history of external forms, and, on the other hand, the individual revolutionary internal force, which generates the really leading masterpieces of art. To him, Curtius’ “Interpretationen von sechs griechischen Bildwerken” in a masterly way teaches us to see these renewing and guiding endeavours in art and to avoid the danger of forgetting them for the imaginary leadership of external forms, naturally transmitted to and used by one generation after another as inherited means of expression. Among Curtius’ results he especially points out the obvious interpretation of the girl from Antium in the Terme‐museum in Rome, afforded by the theatre painting in the Casa di Pinario Ceriale in Pompeii.
