Abstract

Current interest in natural products as an anti-inflammatory drug has resulted in an increased focus in marine secondary metabolites. Marine habitats are the largest environment on earth, with the enormous number of different organisms present, providing a sizeable reservoir of novel compounds. In particular, marine algae have been identified as an underexplored reservoir of unique bioactive secondary metabolites. Some of them, like polyphenols, sulfated polysaccharides, terpenes, oxylipins, fatty acids, sesquiterpenoids, and steroids, are found to exhibit anti-inflammatory activity. This chapter summarizes the latest knowledge on examples of marine natural products discovered from marine algae with anti-inflammatory activity.
