Abstract

The type 2 diabetes alters obesity and cardiovascular disease risks. Several plants are used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in India. This study aimed to ascertain the scientific basis for the selected herbs with the highest anti‐diabetic activity in the management of type 2 diabetes. The blood glucose level and glucose tolerance test were determined in hexane, chloroform and methanol extracts of Centratherum anthelminticum seeds, Terminalia chebula and Terminalia bellirica fruits, before and after oral administration (250 mg/kg body weight) in normal rats model. The methanol extracts of these three plants suppressed the rise in blood glucose in normal rats during a glucose tolerance test significantly (p < 0.05) and among them, Centratherum anthelminticum seeds, methanol extract was more remarkable, confirmed by the study for 28 days in STZ‐nicotinamide induced type II diabetic and normal rat models. Thus the finding of this study suggest that feeding of Centratherum anthelminticum methanolic extract has a potential anti‐diabetic function in the management of type 2 diabetes.
