Abstract

Six species of Antigonia with eight spiny rays in the dorsal fin inhabit the western part of the Indian Ocean. Three of them are described in this paper as new. They are all characterized by relatively not deep body of oval shape. A. ovalis sp. n., distributed in the central part of the ocean is characterized by the deepest body and small scales. A. quiproqua sp. n. from the Saya de Malha bank, has increased number of gill rakers; A. socotrae sp. n., from a slope of Sokotra, possesses a longer head. In addition to these, two other species can be encountered in this area: A. saya, widely distributed in the central part, and A. gr. capros, characteristic of the periphery of the tropical zone (South Africa, Walters Shoals).
