Abstract

FRANCIS (1952) found that phosvitin was non-antigenic in rabbits when tested by (a) intramuscular injection of alum-precipitated phosvitin, (b) intravenous injection of phosvitin solution (2%) and, (c) intraperitoneal injection of the phosvitin solution. He suggested that this failure to display antigenicity might be due to the relatively simple structure of phosvitin and lack of rigidity of the molecule necessary for antigenicity or to similarity of phosvitin to rabbit body phosphoproteins. However, phosvitin does contain small but definite proportions of the aromatic amino acids (Mecham and Olcott, 1949; Lewis et ah, 1950; Taborsky and Allende, 1962). It might be expected, therefore, that phosvitin would have appreciable antigenicity.Insulin is non-antigenic when tested by conventional methods but Morse (1959) has shown that insulin binding antibodies may be obtained by use of Freund’s adjuvant. Accordingly, it was decided to ascertain whether an antiphosvitin serum could be obtained by use of Freund’s adjuvant.MATERIALS…
