Abstract

Hemoglobin, globin, separated α and β chains are immunogenic in guinea-pigs. Specific antisera against α chain and against β chain may be produced. Hemoglobin A appears to have at least 4 different types of antigenic determinants, two of which are specific for β chain (one type shared with isolated β chain and globin, the other only on intact hemoglobin), one is specific for the α chain and is shared with globin an separated α chain, the other present on hemoglobin A and characteristic for the α chain or union of α chain with β chain of the intact hemoglobin A molecule. The antigenic determinants not shared with the separated α and β chains appear to be, in some cases, more immunogenic than those shared with the isolated chains.
