Abstract

The effect of activated glutaraldehyde solution was tested in various dilutions in vitro on 17 different species of fungi. These fungi included nine species of dermatophytes, five contaminants, and three yeasts known to cause nail infections. Two strains of each species were tested utilizing both a dilution and a disc method. The 1% solution was fungicidal to all of the fungi by both methods. The 0.1% gluteraldehyde was fungicidal to some of the fungi by the disc method only. The fungicidal activity of glutaraldehyde against all the fungi tested indicates its possible therapeutic usefulness in onychomycoses caused by a variety of fungi. Further in vivo studies are indicated for evaluation of this substance as an antifungal agent.
