Abstract

Superficial mycotic infections of the skin, hair or nails are among the most common dermatological infections. Successful treatment of these conditions depends first on accurate diagnosis which is often quickly accomplished with a KOH examination, followed by culture on Sabouraud medium. The identity of the fungal organism may provide guidance about the appropriateness of a give topical or oral antifungal agent. For tinea capitis, severe cutaneous mycosis onychomycosis, oral antifungal therapy may be necessary. Topical and oral antifungal agents may be divided into specific and non specific agents. Azoles, ciclopiroxolamine and amorolfine, are non specific agents. Polyenes are anti- Candida products, griseofulvine and allylamines anti-dermatophytic agents.
