Abstract

The results of magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements are presented for these compounds which crystallize in a tetragonal structure deriving from the CuAl 2-type. CeNi 4Sn 2 can be described as an antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice ( T N = 11.0(5) K) showing a metamagnetic transition whereas NdNi 4Sn 2 exhibits a more complex magnetic phase diagram since two magnetic transitions are detected near 13 and 10 K, respectively. T N of CeNi 4Sn 2 is greater than that reported for other stannides existing in the CeNiSn system: CeNi 2Sn 2 ( T N = 1.8 K), CeNiSn 2 ( T N = 3.9 K) and Ce 2Ni 2Sn ( T N = 4.7 K). Moreover, this high T N suggests that the magnetic properties of CeNi 4Sn 2 are not solely governed by the RKKY interactions.
