Abstract

In vitro studies with synaptosomes regionally isolated from adult rat brain have indicated increased GABA uptake by cerebral cortical endings at physiological concentrations of pentobarbital, phenytoin, and diazepam. Nerve endings from the hippocampal cortex showed decreased GABA uptake from the same anticonvulsants. For synaptosomes from convulsed animals GABA uptake was reduced in cortical endings by the anticonvulsants and increased by these drugs in hippocampal endings. The short-term sequalae of convulsions had no effect upon GABA uptake by cerebellar mossy fiber endings, wherein uptake was reduced by the anticonvulsant drugs.
