Abstract

Chitosan was modified by sulfation and by sulfation and an oxidation which converted some of the sugar units to uronic acid units. Anticoagulant activity measurements showed that sulfated chitosans acquired activity only after all amino groups were sulfated, and that activity increased rapidly with increase in O-sulfate content. Introduction of uronic acid groups still further increased anticoagulant activity by about 10 units at all sulfate levels.
