Abstract

This chapter focuses on Andrei Belyi's work ‘The Antichrist’. Belyi defined the subject matter of the mystery play as ‘the coming of the Antichrist in the guise of Christ’, and the theme of the mask develops important symbolic connotations as the plot develops. The mystery play was not a form of drama indigenous to the Russian tradition, and attempts to revive it on Western European models did not begin until the 19th century. Belyi saw the mystery play precisely as a religiously oriented art-form designed to unite actors and onlookers in a ritual celebration of humankind's kinship with the world beyond.
