Abstract

Re-examination of testimonies relating to some occupational songs performed in ancient Greece and in others places of the Mediterranean (linos, epilenios, maneros, lityerses, mariandinos, borimos/bormos). The characters and forms of the songs are surveyed in the context of the performance. The presence of motifs, like the ritual lament for the hero’ s death, the invention of agriculture, the eponymous hero of the song, furnishes the history of the culture and mentality of the ancient world with a further documentation.
