Abstract

Indirect immunofluorescent antibodies to MCFV antigens were detected in 162 of 167 sheep sera collected from 10 different flocks. The location of both “late” and “early” antigens detected by sheep sera was identical to that demonstrated by sera from infected cattle and wildebeest. The ability to remove this activity from sheep sera either by absorption with MCFV-infected cells, but not with uninfected cells, or by prior incubation of the antigen slides with rabbit anti-MCFV serum, but not normal rabbit serum, indicated that the reaction was specific. The serological evidence presented suggests that the majority of sheep are infected with an agent antigenically related to wildebeest-associated MCFV.
