Abstract
SummaryCongenitally athymic mice homozygous (nu/nu) for tile mutation “nude” and control littermates (nu/+) possessing normal thymus function were immunized with E. coli lipopolysaccharide. Nu/nu and nu/+ animals responded well to this thymus‐independent antigen, giving identical titres of serum antibodies. Unexpectedly, nu/nu mice as well as nu/+ animals produced both γM anti γG antibodies by 16 days following a single injection. Surface immunoglobulins of immunized nu/nu and nu/+ mice were isolated by lactoperoxidase‐catalyzed radioiodination, detergent extraction and immunoglobulin coprecipitation. The predominant surface immunoglobulin component on cells of both types of mouse was 7S γM immunoglobulin. The amount of γM surface immunoglobulin recovered from nu/nu mice was generally comparable to that extracted from nu/+ and normal CBA mice.
