Abstract
The objective of this evidence-based project was to determine if a best practice alert (BPA) will decrease the number of oral antibiotic prescriptions for adults with acute bronchitis. The BPA is an electronic prompt that describes the guidelines for the treatment of acute bronchitis. The study sample included prescribing clinicians (N = 41) at 11 retail health clinics that are associated with 1 larger health care organization. A quantitative quasi-experimental pre-/post-study design was used. The chi-square test was used to compare antibiotic prescribing rates. Antibiotic prescribing rates decreased by 40%. The use of a targeted BPA significantly decreased antibiotic prescriptions for acute bronchitis.
