Abstract

Antibiotic prophylaxis prevents would infections in a large number of surgical procedures. All too frequently, however antibotics are either not given or administered in a suboptimal fashion. The development and implemention of guidelines by healthcare institutions to ensure that antiboitics are administered in accordance with accepted principles could reduce wound infections apprecibly. The rising prevalence of multidrug-resistant microorganisms within the healthcare environment (such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) has prompted research into new ways to prevent surgical infections. One such strategy. the augmentation of host defenses, is under evaluation and may eventually be useful in combination with antibotic prophylaxis.
