Abstract

(N Engl J Med. 2016;375(13):1284–1286) Studies have shown that of the 4 million babies that are delivered in the United States, a third are delivered via cesarean delivery. Maternal infection is one of the complications of this surgery with patients are at risk for endometritis and surgical site infections. To prevent these infections, antibiotics such as cefazolin are administered intravenously. Infectious risks can be further mitigated by using infection control protocols and administering broader spectrum antibiotics. The study described above was a randomized controlled trial that compared the addition of broad-spectrum prophylaxis with azithromycin (a macrolide antibiotic) to standard prophylaxis for cesarean deliveries at 14 US hospitals.
