Abstract
This is an experimental research utilizing 100% pure leaf extract from Mikania cordata and tested for anti-bacterial and anti-fungal effects on the growth of Escherichia coli and Aspergillus niger . Mikania cordata samples were collected from San Pedro Gusa, Cagayan de Oro City. They were washed with tap water and rinsed with distilled water to remove dirt and dust, air dried, chopped into small pieces, soaked with 95% ethyl alcohol and filtered. The filtrate was heated in water bath to obtain 100% pure extract. The 100% pure leaf extract was tested to bacterial and fungal representatives using filter paper disc-diffusion method. The zone of inhibitions was measured and compared with the positive control (antibiotics/antifungal) and the negative control (sterile distilled water). The study revealed that only the positive control (Gentamicin and Nystatin) showed a clear zone of inhibition on the tested bacterium and fungus. The Mikania cordata extract and the distilled water did not show any clear zone of inhibition. In conclusion, the 100% leaf extract from Mikania cordata (asyang) has no anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties on Escherichia coli and Aspergillus niger .
