Abstract

Resistance to currently available antibiotics has been on the increase and many plant extracts have been known to treat various diseases caused by resistant strains of bacteria. This study was aimed at determining the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of Annona senegalensis leaf against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The leaf extract was screened for phytocompounds using standard analytical method.The antibacterial acitivity of the leaf extract against bacteria was determined using agar well diffusion method and broth dilution method. The results showed that ethanol extracts of A. senegalensis is highly effective against all bacteria tested at varied concentrations of extract with mean zones of inhibition that ranged from 8.5±0.7 mm – 16.5±0.71 mm, 7.0±00 mm – 17.0±1.41 mm and 11.5±0.71 mm – 20.5±0.71 against S. aureus, S. Typhi and P. aeruginosa. The leaf extract was more effective against P. aeruginosa with MIC and MBC of 12.5 mg/ml and 25 mg/ml. The leaf extract can be used to treat diseases caused by S. aureus, S. typhi and P. aeruginosa.
