Abstract

Current antiobesity medications Obesity is defined as an abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat that poses a risk to health. It is well known that obesity is a major risk factor for a number of chronic diseases such as diabe tes and cardiovascular diseases. The pharma co logical agents that have been developed and clinically approved for use in the treatment of obesity mainly operate through one of the fol lowing two mechanisms: appetite suppression (e.g., desoxyephedrine, phentermine, diethyl propion, fenf luramine, dexfenf luramine, sibutraminea and rimonabant); or the suppres sion of fat absorption (oristat). However, these drugs have been shown to have limited efficacy and unacceptable adverse effects (strokes and severe diarrhea) [1,2], leading to their with drawal from the market or strict limitations of their use.
