Abstract

Petroleum ether (40-600), chloroform, alcohol and aqueous extract of Lagenaria vulgaris fruits have been evaluated for its anti-ulcer activity by using pylorus ligation method in rats. Doses for the different extracts were selected based on the results of acute toxicity studies. The effect was assessed by ulcer index, total acidity and free acidity, pH of gastric contents, serum calcium levels and serum alkaline phosphatase levels. The petroleum ether (40-600) extract of Lagenaria vulgaris fruits significantly raised the pH of gastric contents. It lowered the free acidity, total acidity and ulcer index as compared to control. It significantly raised the serum calcium levels and decreased the serum alkaline phosphatase levels. The extract of Lagenaria vulgaris fruit has significant anti-ulcer property.
