Abstract

In the 1960s some of us wondered why so many children were deformed and killed from burning nightwear. We started a campaign to get the medical profession and industry and government interested in the problem. What happened? Three examples from the literature: (1) McLaughlin et al1 reported that in 1969 through 1973, 32% of children's burns resulted from sleepwear; in 1976, 4%; (2) Jay et al2 reported that "Direct ignition of clothing was a rare cause of burn injury in children ... " (3) In 1975, I reported saved lives to the Information Council on Fabric Flammability.3
