Abstract

Dye-laser excitation into the 5D 0 level of Eu +3 β ″-alumina results in anti-Stokes luminescence above 35 K. The temperature-dependence of the 5 D 0 → 7 F 0 emission is consistent with the occurrence of phonon-assisted energy transfer between europium ions located in different sites. Our results are also indicative of some unusual competition between upward and downward energy transfer.
