Abstract

In the 1968 SciFi movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, HAL 9000 famously says: “I can tell from your voice harmonics, Dave, that you're badly upset. Why don't you take a stress pill and get some rest?”. HAL (an acronym for Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer) has recognised Dave, analysed his speech and determined his mood. It's amazing – but only by 1960s standards in which Space Odyssey was a fiction movie. Fast forward five decades, and nothing that HAL did is fiction any more, thanks to major advances in sensing and artificial intelligence technologies.
