Abstract

SummaryAmniotic fluid β-lysin was found to have zinc-dependent bacteriostatic activity against the enteric bacilli, anaerobic Gram-negative bacilli and Gram-positive aerobic and anaerobic cocci. In contrast, β-lysin was found to exhibit bactericidal activity against the anaerobic and aerobic Gram-positive bacilli. This bactericidal activity was independent of zinc ion concentration. The clinical and biochemical implications of these observations are discussed.
