Abstract

A number of antibiotics have effects on mammalian cells, in addition to their actions in bacterial organisms. A recent illustration of this came from a trial of the macrolide antibiotic, azithromycin, which gave benefits to children with cystic fibrosis, although no clear microbiological reason for this could be identified [ 1.
