Abstract

ABSTRACT This article deals with the under-explored phenomenon of anti-conspiracism and its proximity with anti-populism. Based on the observation that populism and conspiracism share some similar characteristics, the research argues that the opposition to conspiracy theories is sometimes a means of anti-populists to frame anti-system discourses and anti-establishment attitudes as deviant, irrational and potentially criminal. Taking the case of France, especially under the first government of Emmanuel Macron, the article highlights that anti-conspiracism can be in certain cases a corollary of anti-populism.
