Abstract

I MUST confess to a considerable reluctance to repeat, word for word, a lecture which is already printed. I propose, therefore, to attempt a rather rapid summary of the printed form of my Huxley Memorial Lecture* and then to devote my attention to certain problems which could not, in that form, be considered.
