French researchers have made increasing contributions to this development. However, neither the resources nor the institutional position of anthropology in France today correspond to the broadening of its scope and the notable increase in its audience. We therefore considered it necessary to call a conference to assess the situation, to outline the new orientations of the discipline, and to consider how to go about achieving its objectives.
