Abstract

The sensitivity of Hylotrupes bajulus L., Rhagium mordax Degeer, Carabus granulatus L. and C. monilis F. can be estimated by the position of the antenna. This is somehow proportional to the intensity of a given stimulus. A different quality of the stimulus does not influence this reaction. It is even possible to give a typology of the antenna-position for H. bajulus. For all mentioned species a ‘search-run’ can be distinguished from a ‘panic-run’. During a panic-run the animal does not react to any stimulus. Within a search-run however the beetle is modified in his reactions by a new stimulation.
