Abstract

The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) recently released Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Strategic Research Plan, by the Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA). USDOT has recognized that the interaction between vehicles (vehicle-to-vehicle or V2V) and between vehicles and the roadway (vehicle-to-infrastructure or V2I) holds the potential to address safety issues and other difficult transportation challenges. The research on V2V and V2I is branded as IntelliDrive®. The key enabling technology for V2V communication is dedicated short-range communication (DSRC). The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) has allocated a 192frequency band at 5.9 GHz (5.850–5.925 GHz) to DSRC to be used for ITS applications which has various applications including vehicular safety, traffic management, toll collection, and information delivery.
