Abstract
For an airborne radar system to have constant return from point reflectors on the ground, the antenna pattern must be designed to follow the surface curvature. The gain function required for this purpose can differ markedly from the consecant-squared variation, which is suitable for a plane earth. The earth-curvature correction is significant if the maximum radar range exceeds R M /4, where R M is the distance to the radio horizon. Consequently, for a specific maximum range the pattern modification becomes of increasing importance with decrease of altitude, approaching a limiting value of 6 db. The maximum gain of the corrected pattern is derived from the results of a previous paper on this subject. 2 2 D. Levine, “Maximum Antenna Gain of Shaped Beams,” Jour.
