Abstract

IT was observed by Moon (1937) that pituitary extracts rich in adrenocorticotropic hormone inhibited somatic growth in young castrated rats. Extracts of the adrenal cortex and, in particular, purified adrenal cortical hormones such as corticosterone and related compounds which have an oxygen atom on carbon atom 11 of the perhydro- cyclopenteno-phenanthrene nucleus, have been found to have similar effects in normal rats (Ingle, Higgins and Kendall, 1938). The mechanism of this growth inhibition is not understood. It may be mediated by the pituitary, orit may be due to direct metabolic effects of the adrenal cortical hormones. Since the hormones were administered at high dosage levels, the results may even have been due to non-specific or 'toxic' effects, resulting for example in decreased food consumption. In the present communication, results are reported on the effect of adrenocorticotropic hormone onthe action of the growth hormone in the absence of the pituitary.
