Abstract

The isolate was identified as Kodamaea ohmeri (99% confidence value) by Vitek MS (v3.2). Whereas Candida tropicalis produces blue colonies on most chromogenic agars, the combination of pink/purple-to-blue colonies is a hallmark of K. ohmeri. Colonies become fully blue after approximately 1 week of incubation (1). While Malassezia furfur was initially considered due to the patient’s TPN, it grows poorly on solid media in the absence of lipid supplementation. Phenotypic methods (e.g., API ID32C) are unreliable for the identification of K. ohmeri, with only 46.8% of isolates correctly identified in one study (1). In contrast, MALDI-ToF-MS shows high accuracy for this organism with correct species-level identification rates of 96.8% for both Bruker Biotyper and Vitek MS (2).
