Abstract

This chapter discusses ANSI database standards. A database management system (DBMS) is a very popular class of software rivaling word processors and spread sheets. The reference model defines the common terminology and concepts pertinent to all data held within database applications. These concepts are used by the individual database management and dictionary management committees to define their respective standards. The two ANSI database standards are based on two different data models: (1) network and (2) relational. Data record orderings are requested by the application program and are performed by the DBMS prior to their presentation to the program. The network database language contains the syntax and semantics for defining data record types, data record elements, and five different types of relationships. The Data Description Language Committee takes over the task of specifying the syntax and semantics of the data definition language portion of the Committee on Data Systems and Languages database specification. The information resource dictionary system contains access control specifications for extending and modifying the objects contained in an information resource dictionary.
